The Ohio Department of Transportation has approved an $800 million expansion project along the Interstate 70 corridor between Columbus and Dayton, the largest highway investment in the state’s history. Construction is set to begin this summer with completion expected by late 2029.

The project will widen a 45-mile stretch of I-70 from four lanes to six, add new interchange configurations at key exits, and install smart traffic management systems designed to reduce congestion and improve safety. ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks said the expansion addresses years of growing traffic volume on one of Ohio’s most critical freight and commuter routes.

“I-70 carries over 150,000 vehicles daily through this corridor, and that number grows every year,” Marchbanks said. The project is expected to reduce average commute times by 20 minutes during peak hours and create approximately 6,000 construction jobs.
