The SAVE America Act was not successfully passed by the Senate this year. Voters in 11 states will have their say on ballot measures implementing key provisions from the bill in their communities.
While the Senate did not pass the SAVE America Act this year, voters in 11 states will have the opportunity to approve ballot measures implementing the legislation’s provisions in November.
The SAVE America Act would require photo ID to vote and proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
Ballot measures in Arizona and California would combine a voter ID requirement with a prohibition on noncitizen voting or strengthened safeguards against it.
In Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, South Dakota, and West Virginia, only voter ID measures will be voted on in November.
Analysis shows that since 2012, voter ID ballot measures have succeeded in ten states and failed in three. Similar analysis shows that since 2018, voters in 15 states have approved citizen-only voting measures and none have failed.
In Ohio, Issue 3 will appear before voters on November’s ballot. It would require voters to present a government-issued photo ID in order to vote.
“This commonsense requirement will protect Ohio’s elections and is the standard to obtain a job, rent an apartment, board a plane, or drive a car,” said Representatives Adam Bird and Heidi Workman and Senators Theresa Gavarone and Jane Timken in an argument supporting Issue 3.
The lawmakers said that Issue 3 would safeguard Ohio voters from “imposters seeking to steal their vote.”
If passed by voters in November, Issue 3 would take effect immediately as an amendment to the Ohio state constitution.
In Washington, D.C., President Trump and conservative allies have urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to pass the SAVE America Act.
Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) has long supported the photo ID requirement for participation in American elections.
Democrats voted down a stripped-back version of the SAVE America Act offered by Husted. The legislation would have prohibited state and local election officials from providing a ballot to vote in federal elections unless a person provided a valid form of identification.
“As a longtime supporter of the SAVE America Act, I have consistently fought to get this bill through the United States Senate,” says a statement on Husted’s website. “I have voted for the SAVE America Act SIX separate times because I believe requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and strengthening voter verification are commonsense steps that will help secure our elections. I will continue supporting these efforts until we see it signed into law.”
